About the University of Medical Sciences and Technology (UMST), Rwanda Campus

Founded in 1996 in Khartoum, Sudan, the University of Medical Sciences and Technology (UMST) began with a modest campus and two pioneering faculties—Medicine and Medical Laboratory Technology. Over the years, UMST has evolved into a prestigious institution known for its commitment to academic excellence, vibrant research culture, and impactful social contributions.

Starting with only 60 students, the aim was to close the existing gaps between public and private university education. UMST has grown exponentially. By 2021, it supported 17 faculties, welcomed over 7,000 students, and offered more than 27 postgraduate programs across fields such as medical sciences, engineering, and the humanities. UMST has consistently excelled in medical disciplines, including medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, anesthesia, radiology, and medical laboratory sciences, earning recognition and accreditation from numerous international organizations.

Commitment to Social Responsibility and Community Support

UMST is deeply committed to social accountability, dedicating resources to uplift underprivileged communities. This commitment has seen the university build housing and establish healthcare facilities in underserved areas, actively improving community health and well-being.

Resilience in Times of Crisis

On April 15, 2023, war broke out in Sudan, causing devastating destruction to critical infrastructure, including hospitals, universities, and major bridges. Determined to continue its mission, UMST sought alternative solutions to provide students with uninterrupted education.

The "GO AFRICA" Initiative: A New Chapter in Rwanda

In line with its vision to expand educational access across Africa, UMST adopted the slogan “GO AFRICA” and identified Rwanda as the ideal location to host its first Cross-Border Campus. Through collaboration with the University of Rwanda, UMST was able to support Sudanese students in completing their disrupted academic year.

A Full-Fledged Campus in Kigali

Today, UMST’s Kigali campus is fully operational, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and accredited by Rwanda’s Higher Education Council. It serves a diverse student body comprising Sudanese, Rwandans, and other nationalities, all well-integrated into the Rwandan community. UMST students participate in clinical rotations across six hospitals in Kigali City and across Rwanda , gaining invaluable hands-on experience.

Gratitude and Future Endeavors

UMST extends heartfelt gratitude to the University of Rwanda for its support and partnership. Looking ahead, UMST is working with the University of Rwanda and other stakeholders to deepen cooperation in research and to establish joint postgraduate programs. Through this collaboration, UMST continues to strengthen its role as a leading educational institution dedicated to advancing knowledge, fostering innovation, and promoting global partnerships.
